For Wedgwood, fantastic design has been the muse of manufacturing fine china place settings since its inception in the mid-1700’s, earlier on in the business artists worked on Wedgewood’s Jasperware to design wonderful pieces. Exactly the same holds true of patterns in our much more modern era.

Wedgwood’s Nantucket Basket china is a single such design. Inspired by the lovely hand crafted baskets of the earlier 1900’s created on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. The intricacy on the weave is captured quite nicely in the pattern design.

Perhaps there’s no better instance of this than with the Nantucket Basket covered vegetable dish. The photo on the left is the Wedgewood Nantucket Basket example. The example on the right is a Michael Kane Nantucket basket from the early 1900’s.

You will recognize the striking Resemblances. The weave on the basket is quite tight and small. There’s a ridge around the rim on the lid with a ceramic piece within the centre. There’s truly very little that differs between the Wedgwood piece and the inspiration for it. Naturally you can find some variances given the extreme difference in the materials utilized to create each. As in the Nantucket Basket, a lot of of them had swing handles. This might be almost not possible, nor would it be sensible for Wedgwood to replicate this element. But in general, the resemblances are absolutely exceptional.

This close, small basket pattern is repeated on every bit of Wedgewood Nantucket basket china. The middle on the serving platters as well as the salad, dessert and dinner plates are all encircled by a rim of basket weave.

The coffee pot is similar to a Nantucket wine boot basket. Long and cylindrical with the same tightly woven appearance sculpted into the china. Numerous other Wedgwood Nantucket Basket pattern vessels, like teacups and mugs, strikingly resemble smaller sized Nantucket baskets.

To be sure, Wedgwood has really done an excellent job at replicating these cherished baskets of the 1900’s. Staying true to maintaining design being a basis for attractive china, Wedgwood china dinnerware accomplishes this.

It’s notable that this certain pattern is quite “user friendly”. While it is lovely and deemed good dinnerware it is dishwasher safe and totally safe for the microwave.

Wedgwood Nantucket Basket China was inspired because of the turn of the century baskets created on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. Wedgewood has done a exceptional job at capturing the attraction of such wood baskets.
